  1. I am staring a collection of sample directors' treatment note for TTV commercials (advertising). You can make a lot of money as a fresh direction assistant or just out of film school writing treatment notes for directors. Just imagine how much is the work out there. For every TV Commercial that is made, a treatment note has to be submitted., There are tens of thousands of TV commercials being made all the time. So many times the director is just too bust to write it himself so it is outsourced.

The second half of the movie compensates for the first half and proves John Abraham as the suave, rock solid, never-say-die performer backed by Jackie Shroff's well-balanced, stylish & boisterous role as the Chief of RAW, building intrigue which leads to a satisfying end where Walter comes to the forefront revealing a lot about what was going on until the end in subtle ways! Set on the espionage happenings of 1971 Indo-Bangladesh war, the movie revolves around the protagonist Rehmat Ali aka Romeo (John)a bank teller, who is handpicked by the RAW chief Shrikant Rai (Jackie) to serve the nation on foreign soil because of his two significant capabilities - his admirable ability in the art of defense & his skill of mingling in the crowd without a trace. The drama unfolds with a gut wrenching scene where a prisoner is being tortured by the Pakistani counterpart special officer (Khudabaksh Khan), pulling the nail off the nail-bed. There are high and low moments in this film from the performers point of view but storytelling lacks the lusture, leaving the audience wanting for more, especially to cater to the present world audience with extended conscious sensibilities. Lead actors - John and Jackie have justified their roles but the ladies don't impress much with their limited screen presence and short pop up roles weaved around the protagonists. All in all the movie does give a heartfelt tribute to the uncelebrated spies of the nation and manages to connect towards the patriotic feeling, though faintly. Unfortunately the screenplay doesn't strike a chord with the audience inspite of the personal connections of the director with war veterans! Medhavini
  3. What is film distribution? Distribution is the dynamic, competitive business of launching and sustaining films. Like other entertainment sectors, the film business is product-driven: the films themselves are the main reasons why cinema tickets are purchased. But how do people get to know about the range of titles on release, and come to feel they want to see a particular new film? It is the distributors’ task to connect films with the public, drawing the widest possible audience to each one and realising the full potential of the filmmakers’ work. It is well nigh impossible to entice people to a film in which they have no interest. Every new title has its own release plan, which the distributor develops in consultation with the producers and/or parent studio. A saturation release will be prepared for films with mass potential; a more select release for those appealing to narrower groups. The distribution contract Distributors sign an agreement with the producer, sales agent or studio, specifying the rights they hold in respect of each title – to release it in UK cinemas; to promote it in all media; possibly to make a local edit, for example to secure a particular classification – together with the date the license expires and how the income from the release will be accounted for. As films are creative works, or intellectual rather than tangible property, their copyright is owned by the people or organisations that produced or financed them. Distributors act under license on their behalf. A distributor’s opinion as to a film’s playability may – and ideally should – be sought before it is approved for production. In some cases, a distributor becomes a partner in a project, contributing upfront to its development/production costs and later launching it in the market place. Each distributor may release any number of films, in some cases 25 or more, every year. In a typical week, seven or eight new films open in UK cinemas. When considering acquiring a new film, distributors will look for something fresh or outstanding, a special element or potential marketing angle which in due course could help to draw a significant audience. To secure distribution rights for certain films, the distributor may need to pay an advance/minimum guarantee against future earnings to the producer or sales agent. The advance commitment is for the distribution license rights plus the costs of film prints and advertising (P&A). The earlier a distributor is involved, the better It is useful and desirable for producers to have a distribution deal in place before shooting starts. Sometimes this can be viable on the basis of a hot script and anticipated cast. In practice, producers may seek finance from multiple sources, including pre-sales to various territories through a specialist sales agent; banks; private investors; beneficial tax schemes including sale & leaseback; and public subsidies. Full article is here. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- India boasts of about 13,000 theatres enjoying a weekly admission of about 100 million people or 5000+ million per year. Distributors are the last link in the movie chain which take films to the people. Although distribution and exhibition are the end points in the value chain of the film business, they are of utmost importance because "goofing" up at this stage means that the film , however well made, will be a flop at the "Box Office". With post production accounting for 20% of the film budget and taking 20% of the total time, any savings in this would go directly to the bottom line. Digitalization has the potential to bring in the desired savings and drive up profits substantially. Typically a distributor buys rights for a 'territory' and recovers costs from the exhibition of the film. The distributor buys into the risk with the producer. Today, before a film is released, no distributor knows the fate of the movie. Copies are made based on a guesstimate and the stakes are high. The copies are sent to various distributors in the country, who in turn rent them out to theatre owners. If the estimate goes awry, all that the theatre owner, the distributor or the producer can do about it is grin and bear the costs. The digital world, however, works differently. The problem of physically moving the reels from one place to another does not exist. All it requires is a license to make another copy. And, making copies is as easy as clicking a button. The cost of distribution is significantly lower. The theatre owner will no longer be forced to show a movie that is doing badly. He simply has to switch over to the one that the audience wants to watch. Further, with overseas becoming a major territory and considerable costs associated with the same any savings in the distribution costs will be a great boon for film producers and distributors alike. Distribution of films around the world has become such a big business that it fetches about as much business as Delhi-Uttar Pradesh, one of the six distribution territories within India. With tickets in US being priced at $8 and those in UK being priced at 8 pounds the collection from the 10 million population from overseas is same or more than the collection from the 150 million population in of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh . Other disadvantages of physical distribution are because of the high costs of making excess prints and because of the physical nature (rather than digital nature) of prints people in remote corners of the country deprived of seeing a hit film till the print is available for them. Further, if a movie is a flop then because the film is not simultaneously released (because of the physical nature of prints) all over the country at the same time bad publicity may spread and therefore no one may want to see the movie. A primer on digital technology in film distribution Digital cinema or eCinema or eMovies is the latest buzzword that has the potential to profoundly affect the distributors in the industry. Electronic cinema refers to film-less digital distribution and exhibition system of films using high quality digital projectors that are brighter and have higher resolution versions of video projectors. With this, feature films can be projected in small to medium size theatres with DVD playback equipment . It is expected that by 2005, movies as bitable digital data files will increasingly replace physical prints as the preferred medium of distribution.   10. If you were under the impression that episodic TV shows shoot video exclusively these days, then think again. Westworld , HBO's hotly-anticipated, 10-episode thriller, directed by Jonathan Nolan, with JJ Abrams amongst the executive producers, was conceived and executed entirely as a celluloid production, harnessing multiple KODAK 35mm film stocks to deliver an experience of impressive scale and lasting visual grandeur. At the lavish, who's who, Chinese Theatre premiere in Hollywood where there was not an empty seat - audiences were captivated, and the show ended with uproarious applause. The reviews for Nolan's opus were nothing short of spectacular. " Westworld is not the next Game of Thrones --it's much more than that," praised Esquire. "A rare kind of truly transporting television," wrote Vanity Fair, and Time Magazine gushed, "Its carefully chosen details add up to a pulp spectacular that's more thoughtful than any other of this fall's new dramas." Leave it to HBO, the maker of premium television to find a way to go bigger and reset the bar for premium television. Suffice it to say, everything about Westworld is near perfection and the series greatly separates itself from the rest of the television pack. The story will have viewers coming back week after week. The casting is as good as it gets, and the cinematography pushes the boundaries of fine art to its absolute apex. It also prompted a clarion call from pilot episode DP Paul Cameron, ASC for cinematographers to re-assume artistic control by shooting on film. And it offers the tantalizing reminder to studios that shooting on film is perfectly cost-effective across all levels of budgets. HBO's Westworld series takes its premise - about a vast, adult theme park, where the guests are entertained by android hosts - from Michael Crichton's 1973 sci-fi movie of the same name. However, the new serialization expands the storyline, elaborating particularly on the host world and the protagonists who work furtively behind-the-scenes. "It was a big departure to expand an 88-minute movie into a 10-hour series, with more episodes likely in the future, and the expectations were high," remarks Cameron. "This production necessarily needed genuine scale - where the action inhabits different levels of the eerie inner workings of Westworld , as well as the magnificent landscapes and settings of the park itself. Consequently, it needed a big cinematic look, and by far the best way to achieve all of that is by shooting on film. From daytime exteriors to low light interiors, film is elegant, stylish and just fabulous at capturing and holding a look. There was never any discussion; this was a film production from the get-go." Westworld features the acting talents of Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Luke Hemsworth and Clifton Collins, Jr. Filming for the pilot and subsequent episodes, by series cinematographers Brendan Galvin, Robert McLachlan, David Franco and Jeff Jur, took place at Melody Ranch, Santa Clarita, California where the Western town, railroad and elaborate glass-walled inner-world sets were built under the supervision of Nathan Crowley, and also in the striking landscapes near Moab, in Arches National Park, Utah. Cameron says creative references included classic John Ford Westerns through to Ridley Scott's futuristic Blade Runner (1982), although he, Nolan and Crowley resisted the temptation to develop too strong of a look for the show, preferring to keep the overall image, "clean, naturalistic and authentic - pretty much true to what was in front of the camera," he says. The only departure from this approach was the visual treatment of the various dreams, memories and nightmare experiences of the automaton hosts. As Cameron explains, "We shot 16:9, 3-perf, 35mm, with Arricam LT and 235 cameras, using Cooke S-4 Primes and Fujinon Premier zoom lenses for the majority of the production. I breathed a different air, a more nostalgic look, into the android dream sequences by shooting with a set of Canon K35s. These uncoated vintage lenses have particular flaring and halation properties that helped to differentiate the imagery and to bring a spooky sense of their possible consciousness." Cameron selected KODAK VISION3 5203 50D, 5207 250D and 5219 500T stocks to suit the different locations and scenarios of the production. "My primary stock for the day interiors and exteriors was the slow speed 5203 50D. It has absolutely gorgeous, rich, natural blacks, contrast and colour rendition, plus the latitude to easily cope with the dynamic lighting conditions, such as scenes in which the actors enter the saloon interior from the bright daylight exterior. I utilized the 5219 500T for exterior night scenes and low-light interiors, such as the control room, diagnostics center and many other creepy behind-the-scenes environments. I shot the dusk work on KODAK 5207 250D as it reacts really well in the light of golden hour." The footage was all rated normally and then developed normally at Fotokem, in LA, under the auspices of dailies and operations manager Mark Van Horne, who Cameron describes as, "one of the greatest champions of film, who makes shooting with film a fabulous experience." Cameron returned to celluloid after a gap of four years - his last filmed movie was Man On A Ledge (2012) - and performed the color grade on Westworld colorist Shane Harris at Encore/Hollywood. "There's no place like home," says Cameron. "Film is an artistic medium with over 100 years of development that is familiar and comfortable. As opposed to the nascent binary image, where you can't be certain how a pixel might appear, when you throw film up onto the screen, you immediately get an engaging picture that your eyes melt into naturally. Film radiates by nature. The textures, nuances and subtleties in the image, not to mention the superior resolution and handling of color space, far surpass the digital image, no question. Plus, shooting film, the responsibility for the image rests with the cinematographer, underlining the importance of our role. If you want to regain control, shoot film." Looking more broadly, Cameron sees a parallel between the Westworld theme - of a business bounding headlong into commercialized technology before perhaps thinking through the ramifications - and the production industry today. "I find it shocking that, in a short period of time, manufacturers and vendors have usurped the debate around shooting film versus video, making it about binary resolution and side-lining the greater importance of aesthetic and creative choice. The tail has been wagging the dog," he says. "There's a genuine misconception about the costs of shooting film versus video, and producers and studios might want to seriously relook at that, and discover a pleasant surprise. Film can and should be a primary choice, and luckily we have peer producers and filmmakers who are making the positive choice for film.   22. 'Crossing Bridges' is a 2013 Indian film directed by Sange Dorjee Thongdok. It is the first feature film ever to be made in the language of Shertukpen, which is an indigenous dialect native to the state Arunachal Pradesh in India.The film premiered on September 27 at the Mumbai International Film Festival in 2013. It received the National Film Award for Best Film in Shertukpen in 2013. Tashi, a man in his early thirties is forced to come back to his village in the remote northeast region of India after eight years when he loses his job in the city of Mumbai. As Tashi stays in the village waiting for news of any new job in the city to go back to, he begins to experience the life and culture of his native place and his people. He gradually begins rediscovering his roots, which he had never paid attention to earlier. He meets and falls in love with a girl, Anila who is a school teacher in the village She helps him in the process of rediscovering himself with native land. The experience in the village begins to slowly change him and he decides to finally stay back in the village even though he gets the news that he has found himself a new job in the city.
