The Boon of Not Knowing For A Film Actor On A Film Set

Most of us actors arrive into the film Industry having done theater. Theater trains us to be through with every beat and every word of the script. In fact it makes us our own editor.

On a Film Set the actor has the luxury of not knowing what will come after the scene he is supposed to play on a particular day. Some film directors like Ken Loach never share the film script with their actors to be able to work with the surprise and freshness an actor experiences when situations are thrown at his character in the film, much like real life.

Although in a traditional setting Actors are expected to know the script in and out, should have learned each line to the last detail. Preparation for a lot of actors is about how to have all the written text within one's system.  Some misleading stories equate an actor's ability to learn lines to his ability as an actor.

On the contrary In Tarkovsky's words film as the fragmented medium affords the actor the luxury of not knowing that he or she should use in full measure.

The workshop will be about how to go through the script, understand its nuances, work out the inter personal relationships, prepare the character and then throw the script into the sub conscious. it will talk about how to remain open to the moment of the shooting. it leads to fresher performances and more original ones too.
