Legend of Puppets


The impact of puppetry depends on the process of transformation of puppets Into magic and play. Puppetry is an old traditional art and it is alive, in every culture. It has helped preserved our history and our stories and has been used in various contexts, be it Spiritual, educational or entertainment. Know and understand storytelling from the oldest form of entertainment - puppets.


Puppets is an art of storytelling and it provides a link between learning and play which makes them a wonderful teaching tools for at home, preschool, school or in the wider community. Puppets are both entertaining and captivating. Young children and people can believe and relate to them; they can enter and explore the fascinating inventive world that puppets create. Learning through play is fundamental to human education and helping them to develop the necessary skills in life. Puppets can stimulate imagination, encourage creative play and discovery and are a wonderful interactive way to introduce narrative to even the most reluctant reader. They can be a powerful way of bringing story time to life; puppets can provide a focus for role play,encouraging the creativity and involvement in activities and can play a fundamental part in the recitation of stories and verse.


What will happen :

And Anurupa Roy will demonstrate in her LEC DEM at the

studio workshop hub of Truth School : An Institute of Innovation and Storytelling that is at Zorba the buddha.

During the lec dem, Anurupa Roy will look at Puppetry as an artform which has evolved over the last 3000 years in India. She will show various forms in India, Europe, South and South East Asia using various mediums. She will further explore the historical,

anthopological and philosophical contexts of puppetry with visuals.She will also present some current issues within puppetry, its uses,application in field of education, entertainment and creativty. She will then try to build a simple puppet with the audience and lastly will do a short interactive presentation with Malvolio and Magarina.


About Anurupa Roy :

Anurupa Roy, celebrated women Indian puppeteer, has taken it as her mission to use puppetry to address important social issues related to reproductive health, livelihood, community and education. She has been a professional puppeteer since 1998 and runs the puppet theatre company ‘KAT-Katha'. In her shows she combines traditional art of puppeteering with dance, acting and digital art. Anurupa believes that puppetry is one of the most powerful tool available to change people's mindset about social issues. Under her leadership Kat-Katha has produced several performances that address gender issues and AIDS.
